  • Promotes health and well being
An ex-Navy seal, his girlfriend and their friends head out on a road trip to New Orleans. When the group decides to stop at a roadside convenience store, they are introduced to the legend of Lockjaw, a Creature who is part man, part alligator...The Legend has it that an inbred local man lost his family to a monstrous white alligator. And because of the devastating loss of his family, he was driven to madness and was transformed into the Creature. The group decides to head deeper into the swamps to check out the birthplace of this Creature legend. As they journey further into the backwoods the group inadvertently unleashes the Creature and all of it s TERROR!Creature is somehow inadequate as a title for this old-skool horror flick, which offers not merely deranged hillbillies but also a half-! man, half-alligator monster on the loose. But perhaps Manigator and Croco-sapiens were taken. A group of flippant young people (notable this time for including marine vets) ventures into the Louisiana bayou, where they make the mistake of piquing the interest of some locals (note to self: whilst on the back roads of the South, do not stop at a ramshackle store called "Chopper's"). While searching for the legend of a Bigfoot-like swamp fiend, the six nubile travelers endure the nightmare of their lives, mostly arranged around muddy campgrounds and underground beast lairs. Fred M. Andrews's film isn't notable for much more than its copious nudity and gore, but it does have a couple of passable plot revelations, and veteran B-movie heavy Sid Haig (Spider Baby, The Devil's Rejects) gets to deliver his brand of sinister patter to potent effect. It's too bad the travelers must do stupid things to keep the story line moving, because with a few im! provements this might have climbed a couple of steps up the ev! olutiona ry ladder for horror movies that feature primordial beasts; but as it is, gorehounds will find it a sufficient time killer. --Robert HortonStudio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 07/31/2007 Run time: 240 minutes Rating: NrPhotographer Andrew Zuckerman's strikingly detailed images of animals from around the world are as delightful as they are inspiring. A collection of eighty all new poems, Acolytes is distinctly Nikki Giovanni, but different. Not softened, but more inspired by love, celebration, memories and even nostalgia. She aims her intimate and sparing words at family and friends, the deaths of heroes and friends, favorite meals and candy, nature, libraries, and theatre. But in between, the deep and edgy conscience that has defined her for decades shines through when she writes about Rosa Parks, hurricane Katrina, and Emmett Till's disappearance, leaving no doubt that Nikki has not traded one approach for another, but simply made room for both.

In 1995, it was promising to hear that Mel Brooks was creating "the companion piece to Young Frankenstein." He had also brought in the heavyweight of deadpan--Leslie Nielsen. As Lt. Frank Drebin in the Police Squad movies, Nielsen has no peer for silly stuff--just the player Brooks would seem to need for a strong movie, as any fan of Brooks perpetually hopes a new film may rekindle his madcap magic. Alas, the end results in Dracula: Dead and Loving It include a sprinkling of amusements and one big belly laugh. Brooks and his writers use a very tight adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, but the spoofs can be spelled out as we go, as if they are paint-by-number. Some are jabs at Coppola's version of Dracula, but most are attached to classic Dracula films. If any real pleasure comes from the movie it's thanks to the efforts of the cast. Peter MacNicol plays the crazed Renfield to the letter, Steven Weber has a good time as the tight Bri! tish Harkin, and Lysette Anthony charms as the doomed Lucy. Br! ooks and Nielsen ham it up just fine. There's even a surprisingly controlled performance by Harvey Korman (a character spoofing Anthony Hopkins's role in the misfire The Road to Wellville). As with Brooks's period comedies, the film looks better than it needs to and includes a few tricky special effects for good measure. This has nothing to do with the audience laughing--we need bigger jokes. And when you double over laughing in one scene--involving a stake through the heart and a bucket of blood--you want the movie to achieve Brooks's days of glory, when hearty laughter was the norm, not an isolated moment. --Doug Thomas

Analyze That has more bada bing than its lukewarm reception would lead you to expect. Analyze This (1999) had the advantage of a then-fresh idea--Robert De Niro as a neurotic mob boss seeking therapy with reluctant shrink Billy Crystal--but that idea's stale (and has been handled more authentically in The Sopranos), so this sequel relies on established chemistry and zesty dialogue that matches the original. There's nothing wrong with a retread when it's this funny, and De Niro's latter-day penchant for comedy suits him well when, as kingpin Paul Vitti, he lures Dr. Sobel (Crystal) into a prison breakout scheme involving faked catatonia and West Side Story show tunes. The contrived plot involves Vitti's criminal comeback. Unfortunately, there's little room for Lisa Kudrow as Sobel's sarcastic wife, but De Niro's Raging Bull costar Cathy Moriarty-Gentile is welcomed as a riv! al mob queen. You want a comedy masterpiece? Fuhgeddaboudit. ! You want 95 minutes of easy fun? It's right here... and don't miss those obligatory outtakes. --Jeff Shannon

Acclaimed filmmaker John Sayles captures six American women at one of the most emotionally charged moments of their liveseach on the verge of adopting a babyin this "compelling" (Chicago Tribune) drama set against the backdrop of a Latin-American town. Featuring an "inspired" (The Miami Herald) all-star cast, this poignant look at fate, maternity and clashing cultures is "as rich in ideas as it is in fine acting" (Los Angeles Daily News).John Sayles brings observant compassion and calm insight to Casa de los Babys, a fiercely independent film with a peerless ensemble cast. Dispensing with traditional storytelling to focus instead on the ! turbulent emotions surrounding the adoption of babies by American women in an unnamed South American country (filmed in Acapulco, Mexico), Sayles takes an unobtrusive approach to their dilemmas, listening (and filming) like an understanding friend to these hopeful women, who are either bound or separated by their disparate personalities. Sayles also covers both sides of the adoption equation by including a Latina mother (Vanessa Martinez), certain that her baby will enjoy a better life with adoptive American parents, but still struggling with the anguish of her sacrifice. This isn't on par with Sayles's best work (and reviews were predictably mixed), but there's not a false note anywhere, and the cast (including Daryl Hannah, Marcia Gay Harden, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lili Taylor, Susan Lynch and Mary Steenburgen) is uniformly superb. Sayles isn't playing social commentator here, and that's to his credit. Instead, Casa de los Babys is a sensitive film about a sensitive su! bject, allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions. --Je! ff Shann onDirector John Sayles has long excelled in films driven by character-rich interpersonal relationships, and this tale of six disparate women who find themselves thrown together in a South American motel waiting for bureaucrats to process their adoption papers for a local orphanage is no exception. Sayles obviously handpicked this diverse collection of songs and styles to underscore the tropical mood and rich emotional tenor of his story, but his selections also display a playful delight in willfully debunking various Latin music sterotypes as well. The retro doo-wop of Las Zafiras, sultry ballads of Broadway star Rita Moreno and spare modernism of Lhasa prove that influences migrate freely both ways across the equator, while Carlos Puebla and Ruben Blades display the compassion beneath their oft-politicized music. The collaborations of Mason Daring and Claudio Ragazzi (including the Moreno-performed "Quien Sera") further underscore the sense of pan-American richness! that informs this compelling soundtrack from first cut to last. -- Jerry McCulleyAcclaimed filmmaker John Sayles captures six American women at one of the most emotionally charged moments of their lives--each on the verge of adopting a baby--in this compelling drama set against the backdrop of a Latin American town. (Action) Bale stars as an ex-Army Ranger who finds himself slipping back into his old life of petty crime and booze after a job offer from the LAPD evaporates. Honorable discharged, Homeland Security wants to recruit him for some special ops in Central America, but first he has to pass a urine test...which proves difficult. Film directorial debut for Ayer who has written such box office hits as TRAINING DAY, U-571 and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUSBleak as its South Central Los Angeles setting, Harsh T! imes is like a suicidal vortex swallowing men who ought to know better but can't stop their self-destruction. Christian Bale stars as Jim Davis, a stressed-out, former Army Ranger who becomes a very bad influence on his weak-willed buddy, Mike Alvarez (Freddy Rodriguez of Six Feet Under). Together the two meander through streets at night, getting drunk and stoned, finding trouble for its own sake and inviting danger as a ritual of machismo bonding. Mike's wife, Sylvia (Eva Longoria), a lawyer whom Mike, working as a telemarketer, put through school, is repelled by Jim and watches in pain as her spouse chooses a downward spiral over renewal and redemption with her. When Jim's application to join the L.A. police is turned down, he leads Mike into pure anarchy. An impractical change of fortune doesn't help any, and first-time director David Ayer, who wrote the screenplay for Harsh Times years before his script for Training Day, goes to some lengths, dr! amatically and visually, to convey Jim's unhinged condition. T! he drear iness of it all, and a sense that Bale has constructed--but not exactly lived in--another in his gallery of lost, misfit souls, makes it hard to connect with this film. Still, it is hard to turn away from these desperate and dangerous characters. --Tom Keogh
